INDIAN WEAVERS

Poetic Devices:
This poem is composed by Indian poetess, Sarojini Naidu. She has highlighted three main events of human life.

Poetic Devices used in the poem are given below:

Weavers, weaving at break of day,

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘w’ has been             repeated.

2. Metaphor- ‘Break of day’- beginning of the day has been indirectly compared to the ‘beginning of new life’

Why do you weave a garment so gay?……

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘w’ and ‘g’ has been repeated.

Blue as the wing of a halcyon wild,

Answer: 1. Simile- The ‘color of the garment has been compared to the ‘blue wing of a halcyon’.

2. Inversion- The order of the word has been changed to create poetic effect. Correct order of the line- ‘Blue as the wing of a wild halcyon’.

We weave the robes of a new-born child.

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘w’ has been repeated.

Weavers, weaving at fall of night,

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘w’ has been repeated.

2. Metaphor- “fall of night”, it’s been compared to the ‘beginning of adulthood’.

Why do you weave a garment so bright?……..

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘w’ has been repeated.

Like the plumes of a peacock, purple and green,

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘p’ has been repeated.

2. Simile- The ‘bright garment has been compared to the ‘purple and green plumes of a peacock.

We weave the marriage-veils of a queen.

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘w’ has been repeated.

Weavers, weaving solemn and still,

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘w’ and ‘s’ has been repeated.

What do you weave in the moonlight chill……

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘w’ has been repeated.

2. Metaphor- “midnight chill”, it’s been compared to the ‘death’.

White as a feather and white as a cloud,

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘w’ has been repeated.

2. Simile- The ‘whiteness of the funeral shroud’ has been compared to a ‘white feather’ and a ‘white cloud’. 

We weave a dead man’s funeral shroud.

Answer: 1. Alliteration- The sound of the letter ‘w’ has been repeated.
